What are the effects of excessive wear of the bulldozer sprocket segment group?

The crawler bulldozer undercarriage group carries the full weight of the bulldozer and is responsible for the driving function of the bulldozer. The main damage form is wear, which is concentrated in the following contact parts: the sprocket segment group and the outer surface of the track pin and track bushing: the idler assy and the track link assy rail surface; the track roller and the track link assy rail surface; carrier roller and track link rail surface; track pin and track bushing contact surface; track shoe and ground, etc.

1. Wear of the sprocket segment group

Wear of the sprocket segment often occurs at the root of the teeth, front and rear flanks, left and right flanks, and the top of the sprocket segment teeth. Wear occurs on the front side of the sprocket segment teeth when the bulldozer travels forward and the sprocket segment teeth hold up the track pin and track bushings; conversely, when the bulldozer travels backward, wear occurs on the rear side of the sprocket segment teeth. When the track is too loose, the track is skewed, and the sprocket segment teeth impact the side of the chain link, which will cause wear on the side of the drive sprocket segment teeth.
Another form of wear on the sprocket segment is top wear. Top wear occurs when the track and sprocket segment are packed with viscous material and the engagement of the sprocket segment with the track pin and track bushing is altered. As the bulldozer travels forward, an impression is made on the apex of the back of the teeth on the drive side of the sprocket segment and the side of the track pin and track bushing

2. The wear of the track

In the undercarriage parts system of the dry track (as opposed to the lubricated track and the sealed track), the track is not lubricated, which causes wear between the track pin and the track bushing due to the relative movement during the working process. Wear between pins and bushing in the track is unavoidable and normal, but this wear will lengthen the pitch of the track and make the track too large. If this wear condition continues, the track will move sideways, which will cause the wear of the idler, track roller, carrier roller, sprocket segment and other components, and also aggravate the wear of the track pin and bushing.

The wear of the track is also manifested in the reduction of the track height due to the contact between the track shoe and the ground, and the track link height caused by the contact between the track surface of the track link raceway and the idler, track roller and carrier roller of reduction. When the track shoes are severely worn, the traction force of the bulldozer will be lost.

For the wear of the crawler traveling mechanism, the following measures can be taken:

1. If the bulldozer’s crawler undercarriage is obviously worn at an early stage, the operation should be stopped immediately, and the coincidence of the center of the idler, sprocket segment, track roller, track shoes, track chains and the longitudinal center line of the undercarriage frame should be checked;

2. In order to extend the service life, the front and rear track rollers can be exchanged, but the original position of the single and bilateral rollers on the undercarriage frame must be kept unchanged;

3. After the parts of the undercarriage are worn to the limit of use, the idlers, track rollers, rollers, sprocket segment group, thorns, and chain rails can be repaired or replaced by surfacing welding;

4. For the situation that the pitch of the track chain becomes longer due to wear and tear, it can be remedied by reversing the track section or replace the new track section.
